F. Tracy, Traveling Agent. COMMUNICATIONS. A Note tor the Doctors.

A REMEDY FOB DIFTHEKIA. From Gatiffnani. This affection which comprises those known under the name of bad sore throat, angina, croup, French angine cuuenneuAe, has hitherto been considered one of the most difficult to cure. We sometime back gave an account of Dr. method, wliich con sists in administering storax under the form of a syrup; but we now find in Lie iter ue Therapeutique, a paper by Dr.

A. De Grand Boulogne, Vice Consul at Havana, in which he mentions ice as an infallible specific. As this, from its extreme simplicity would, if effective, be fur superior to any yet tried, we cannot refraiu from quoting the mentioned by the author, who had published this remedy far back as February. ami consequently complains (not without reason, if iis efficacy is such as he describes it) of the inexcusable negligence of practitioners in not takiog notice of it, thereby alowing many valuable lives to be lost. The following cases came under his observation after that date In March and April, 1801, the disease iii question broke out under an epidemic form and chiefly attacked adults with such virulence that iu one week three young women died iu one house.

One of Dr. De patients, afflicted with blepbacite, was seized with it, and as he could not immediately attend, owing to the severity of the case another physician was called in, who ordered emetics and aluminous gargles, which produced no effect. At length Dr. De Grand caine, and found the tonsils greatly swollen, and a false membrane covering them. He immediately administered small pieces of ice, and by the following morning the tumefaction of the tonsils had diminished by half, and the false membrane had nearly disappeared.

That very evening she was enabled to take food. Profiting by this example, a few days after her brother was seized with sore throat, presen ting the same preliminary symptoms as those of his sister; but he, without waiting for the doctor, at once took some ice, ami was rid of his sore throat in a few hours. Some days later Dr. DeGrand was summoned to a young lady who had been laboring under the disease for some forty-eight hours; all remedies had failed, and the parents, relations and friends of the family were plunged in the deepest sorrow. hen Dr.

De Grand ordered ice, a general cry of astonishment was uttered by all present Ice for a sore throat! Impossible! It was sheer murder! Dr. DeGrand maintained hia ground, and after much expostulation, during which much time was lost be obtained his end. Before twenty-four hours were over, the patient was in full convalescence. Beiug at Vera Cruz on a mission, he was requested to see a young man who was attacked with malignant throat, and had been treated without effect by cauterizations with hydrochloric acid and astringent gargles. Here again lie had to battle with the prejudices of the family, but was at length allowed to- administer ice.

The young man recovered in the course of the following day. Dr. De Grand has now been using this remedy for the last twelve years without having met with asingle failure. That is what he says, but even If only half of what he says were true, the method should be tried by others. Cold gargles have been employed with success by Dr.

Blanc of Strasburg; why not Ice? From the Providence Journal. What a Democratic Officer Thinks. The following extract from a private letter from a Democratic officer iu oue of the llhode Island regiments has been placed in our hands for publication: am still a Douglas Democrat, but I fear the word has been damned by its associations. IfSeymour and Toucey of Contiectlcut, the Woods of New York et id omne are Democrats, I am not. If Butler, Diqkmsou, Brady Company, are Democrats, I am oue, still I must confess it would be hard lor me to support any cause that the Providence Post endorsed.

In the last election I perceived there were two parlies. Oue of them was bound to support the administration at all hazard, the other would support the administration so far as its policy was endorsed by their judgmeut. Can there be any doubt which party a soldier would vote for? A soldier sees the necessity of giving absolute power so far as is possible, to any officers that are expected to wage successful war. That Jeff Davis has had sucli power the secret of the succe-si'ui resistance of the rebels. I happened some time since to see copy of the Providence Post and among the arguments used to induce the casting of votes for its candidate were lhaithev would avoid the draft, Ac.

Also Bradley in hii speech went in for a conciliation of the wayward by a repeal of the Emancipauon roewmatlon. I agree with Cardinal ivcne.n^u, my two great maxims, nm, employ all methods to conciliate. Failing these, all means to Conciliation and played out. We have been at it for thirty years, and behold the result. I do not understand that war policy wltieh recommends the hitting your enemy a.

soft blows as possible I ity, all the means within your reach. Strike harder aud harder, redouble your blows, until he cries then be merciful if you will, but flm be u.t There is a deal of luss about negroes and if any oue advocates using negroes on our side he is a F'earlu! epithet, ft once had power, but after has become acclimated to rebel shells, he doesn't much fear copperhead bombshells. I believe in using tile negro to subdue the rebels, as I would use my sabre, a horse or a jackass. If lie will fight use him as a soldier; if lie will work, let him dig the trenches and drive the teams. I believe the Emancipation Proclamation to be a good war measure, and that this summer will demonstrate the same.

When this war Is uvrr ruu uui utu lis uominion over every foot of territory, if then I am in the land of the living, I hope to fight under the democratic banner, hut until that time, I shall support the administration which may happen to he in power, no matter how much my judgment may condemn its 1UE Eight of the Nation to 1 lie plausible argument that drafting should be effected through the State authorities is conclusively answered by a single consideration. 'File nation has the inherent right to protect and defend itself us a nation against domestic or foreign enemies. For this purpose the Federal Government must cover the whole country, and be able to summon the men of the country to its as well as to tax the property of the country to furnish its treasury. Troops wanted lor the use of the republic must lie at the disposal of the constitutionally elected rulers of the republic for the time being. Governors may be factious, as well as individuals, and refuse co-operation at critical moments, and when most needed.

There has been actual experience of tills already. It is not to be forgotten that at the outset of the war certain border States, through their hall-loyal magistrates, refused to furnish their quotas to the army raised to put down tlie rebellion. Moreover, there are governors to-day, who, if they had the power, would virtually re-enact secession, and make their support of the Federal Government depend upon the acceptance of their conditions or their policy; and this too when a majority of their constituents are thoroughly loyal. The insidious reasoning that would transfer the Executive of the Ration in any degree from Washington to Albany, is to be watched, as inimical to the true interests of the country and the true interpretation of its institutions. The President is directly responsible to the tieople.

and amenable to the Judiciary of the land. He is not responsible to Horatio Seymour, and docs not hold office by his sufferance. Consequently the assumption of this gentleman and his party, to direct the proceedings of the President, or to exercise over them practically a veto power, is simply preposterous. The Nation has not chosen him or his followers, engineers or brakemen of the Cube fob Dysentery. Dr.

Page of Washington communicates the following to the Republican of that city: The following simple remedy, long known in family practice, was recently tried in the camp of the New Vork Twenty-Second Regiment, where there were from eighty to one hundred cases daily of dysentery, a'ud with rapid cures in every case. a tea-cup half full of vinegar dissolve as much salt as it will take up, leaving a little excess of salt at the bottom of the cup. Pour boiling water upon the solution t.ll the cup is two-thirds or three-quarters full. A scum will rise to the surface, which must be removed, and the solution allowed to cool. three times a day till relieved.

The rationale of the operation of this simple. medicine will readily occur to the pathologist, aud, in many hundred trials, I have never known it to fail iu dysentery aud protracted diarrhea. The Vbamk a time when the business community seemed in danger of being flooded with shinphislers of irresponsible persons in order to supply the deficiency in (mail coin, Gen. Satnuel Yeazie of Bangor, a Banker of large wealth was requested by many interested in business to prevent this card currency of doubtful value from spreading over the state, by the issue of fractional checks of good appearance and which would command the confidence of all. He did so, and his fractional have performed a good service and saved to the business community thousands oi dollars, besides ufiordiug a great convenience.

Of late, persistent efforts seem to be made to limit the circulation of the by statements that they have been counterfeited. Every check has been redeemed when presented for redemtion and all have been found genuine by the parties who ma them. hey are safe as any paper currency can be. We take them as readily as any money offered. General Yeazie bus performed a good service to community and we thank him.

No person should dispose of tliesa Yeazie checks at a discount beyond the Express fees for Journal. THE following is a list of those exempted trom draft iu the 1st District. Aug.
