with child By GARY REMAL Staff Writer AUGUSTA The state Depart ment of Human Services has barred all contact between a 2 year old with cystic fibrosis and her maternal grandmother after the grandmother complained publicly about the handling of her case Linda Corbin of Augusta defied a District Court gag order when she told the Kennebec Journal the department falsely accused her daughter of providing inadequate care to the child She also com plained they had not been given a chance to defend themselves in court in the more than eight months since the girl was taken from their custody is a vendetta here Corbin said Monday trying to save my Michaela Corbin Bumford was taken from the home al legedly be cause the child to in their home failing to gain weight Despite a court order granting visita tion rights to both Corbin and her daugh ter which still stands Corbin received a letter from Department of Human Ser vices Services Case worker Terri Gallant denying visi tation to the grandmother good is a signature on a court order if there is no way for the court order to be Corbin asked In a letter to the 19 year old mother Trisha Coibin Gallant said she would be denied all unsuper vised contact with her daughter to prevent Michaela from seeing her maternal grandmother The little girl recently was hospi talized in Portland for two weeks for treatment of a respiratory infec tion a frequent side effect for pa tients with cystic fibrosis because of the tendency to build mucus in the lungs Corbin said de partment officials again altered vis itation for her and her daughter during hospitalization without returning to court for au thority letter is to advise you that the department is suspending all visitation between you and Michaela Corbin Gallant wrote to Corbin on Aug 5 de cision was based in part on your behavior at Maine Medical Center while Michaela was hospitalized and also due to your recent conver sations with the Kennebec Journal Your decision mother Gallant wrote: visitation between you and Michaela will now be supervised at all times One of the primary concerns relates to Linda last hospital visit with Michaela and her recent decision to' speak with the Kennebec Journal about this case despite the regarding this issue This demonstrates your inability to act in best Michaela was released from the hospital last week but Corbin said she remains concerned for her health Corbin said she went public with her case because she feared the department was abusing its power and the court had failed to curb those abuses going to court with it to file contempt charges and an injunc she said just hoping to get our side in which we have nev er been able to State Department of Human Ser vices spokesman David Winslow declined to comment on case or the actions to limit visitation by the little family without a court order addition to Maine statutes (requiring confidentiality in child protective hearings) the court or der prohibits our comment and we will be respecting that Winslow said The director of public and legislative affairs also declined to discuss his policies on changing court orders in child protective cases other than to say have to follow court or ders just like everybody else But Corbin said Department of Human Services officials were just mad at her because she has stood up to them and because they want to admit they
