He was very well liked. I'm finding people coming out of the woodwork here who just knew him." Mr. Hoyt was born in Colorado, where his father was stationed in the military. He grew up in Kittery and York. His parents traced the Hoyt family lineage to the Mayflower.

He moved to Winter Haven from Orono in 1999. Mr. Hoyt got along well in Florida, but always missed Maine, Gordon 'Spike' Stein, 61 Gordon "Spike" unexpectedly on Nov. 20, 2004, enjoying the beauty and magic of life while hiking with his beloved wife Freda in Bradbury State Park. Spike was born Aug.

13, 1943 in Montana. He gradu- Gordon 'Spike' Stein ated from the University of Notre Dame and received a law degree from the University of Seattle Law School. He served as a VISTA attorney in Alaska before moving to Maine to work for Pine Tree Legal Services. He has practiced law in Hallowell, and, over the past 17 years, in Damariscotta with his partner Jim Gallagher. Spike's passion for life and the wonder of existence was not contained within him.

It flowed freely, was shared widely, and found expression in everything he did. Whether building a walking path through the woods, growing immense vegetables, surf-kayaking big waves in Hawaii, riding a waterski bike straight to the bottom of a lake, or building a bridge to nowhere. Spike saw grand potential in every idea and seized each project with zeal and his own special brand of grace. The story of his life is filled with unexpected twists and surprises. Throughout his journey Spike greeted every challenge as an opportunity and faced each morning with eternal optimism.

Spike enriched our world with his love and energy. He will be deeply missed and always remembered. He is survived by his wife, Freda Bernotavicz; son, Andrew Stein of New York City; daughter, Hilary Stamp and husband Tom of Dayton, Ohio; son, Chris Hale and wife Estelle of Anchorage, Alaska; a brother, Arthur Saunders and wife Linda of Canton, Ohio; a sister, Melinda and husband Robert Leverty of Wooster, Ohio; grandchildren, Erik, Rhea, and Aidan; and stepchildren, Alexa Bernotavicz of Jackson, N.H. and Jarad Bernotavicz of Portland.
